William, Alondra and Josh on the teeter totter
Walking to the Villa this morning, this picture gives no idea of the heat and humidity!

Ana, Maggie and Brittany looking beautiful

Today was a great day!

Maggie took a bag full of dance costumes to share, the girls loved them. Josh really connected well today, they love him but are a little stand-offish because he is an older boy (i think), but today everything was clicking! He had a great time making puzzles and playing other games.
William and Josh rode with Mario to get lunch for Wilbert from Wilert and Gloria's house, they got to meet baby Naomi before me! Gloria is not bringing her out much yet because of her sickness, but maybe tomorrow I can meet her. For those of you who know of Naomi's sickness, apparently it was a virus that got to her heart and made the tissue around her heart swell, although that is bad it is not a diagnosis she will have to deal with her entire life.

William is everyone's friend, they think he is so handsome and love his smile. He is holding it all together so well. Today Juliette was teasing him and messed up his art project, well if you know William he doesn't do well with that sort of thing. He didn't hit her or scream he simply walked over to me and shed a few tears. It was good though because Juliette realized that maybe it wasn't very nice what she had done and felt his sadness and once he recovered, she helped him rebuild his masterpiece. It was good for everyone!

Maggie is loving the little girls and Jacob (Wilbert and Gloria's son) well. She is so good at loving little kids no matter what the language. Brittany was anxious to read the Bible with her today, they shared John 3:16 and many other verses. When we got home Maggie said she wanted to remember to take her Bible with her tomorrow so they could read more.

What did I do today... I forgot to tell my kids to drink water and wash the mangoes before they eat them, Josh and Maggie are suffering now from cramping stomaches and diarrhea. They both say they drank lots ~ please pray that they are recovered by the morning. I found lice in someones hair and spent time washing and picking nits. I helped clean one of the new houses, they are getting them ready because Sunday El Faro Church (the church to La Chureca) is coming to the Villa and they need bathrooms! They are bussing over the whole church plus many others from La Chureca, we are expecting 400 people.
I have to sleep now. Tomorrow night my first team comes in at 9:00. We are going to a soccer game in the afternoon and hopefully to the Villa en la manana. I want to send you some pictures before I sleep. If anyone see's Ramona can you please tell her that her letters have been PERFECT! I am so thankful for the wonderfully funny, encouraging and insightful notes she has sent.
I love you all!

  1. I love to hear about everything that's going on! And it brings me so much joy to hear you say when you "got home," because I know what that's like to be so familiar with a place and to have it be home even though it 's not your home in the States. It just sounds perfect -- even with broken arms, lice, diarrhea. I'm excited for these relationships that you are building and for everything that God is going to do while you are there.

On Tuesday Ivy, Leeza, Kaitlin, and I just sat on your trampoline and talked. It was a good night but we missed having you.

    I love and miss you!

Ten years ago, April of 2010 we were busy cleaning our house and selling everything we didn't think we would want in a year when we returned from Nicaragua.  Our plan was to spend a year in Nicaragua, actually, Dwight's plan was 6 months.  Our plan was for such a short time because if the kids were struggling or if it wasn't a good fit for us, then we could change plans and return to the U.S..  We rented our house furnished.  We all packed two suitcases and were ready to leave for Nicaragua on June 28.  The evening of the 27th we got a call from American Airlines saying our flight had been cancelled.  Wait a minute I thought; we are moving to Nicaragua, our bags are packed, we have left our house, you can't cancel our flight.  But they did and rescheduled us to fly out two days later. That is how our life has been over the last 10 years.  We make a plan, and our plan, for the most part, has not gone at all as we expected.  I think we are better for this.  Our expec

How Can They Grow So Fast?

Josh got on a bus today to travel 24 hours to Panama City, Panama. He will be gone until the 14th of March participating in a conference called HACIA Democracy (Harvard Association Cultivating Inter-American Democracy). He is a Nicaraguan delegate, representing the U.S. on their stand on gun control. He has studied and now will discuss and argue with others about this topic. Dwight said to me yesterday, as we are packing his suit, how did he grow up so fast? And my question was, did we do a good enough job, what have we missed? The time with our kids is so short and I am so thankful to know that every minute of their lives God has been right there loving them, teaching them and protecting them. They love Him and that is all I could ever want. I am so proud of each one of them. They don't spend so much time cuddling together but I know they love each other and desire the best for one another. They always support each other in their work, fun and dreams. They other night we

Let Me Consume Jesus More Than Anything

William and I have been reading through the Daily Chronological Bible since school began in August.  Our dates don't match the reading and we have picked up the pace as we realized it is not likely that we will finish before we go our separate ways.  It has been so good to spend our mornings together this way, especially during his last year of high school.  I find myself thinking on the scripture we read all through the day and the lessons we are learning.  God's Word is not an easy word.  It is filled with blessing and loss... the loss is so great, but God, over and over again redeems what was lost.  The Bible is truly the story of redemption over and over.  He is our hope and salvation. The other day William was reading John 6:56, it says, "Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him" .  I heard the scripture differently that day.  Maybe because this version said "feeds on my flesh" and I had mostly heard "eats my fle
